It could, but I imagine it would be hard to defend in court.

For example, if an employer discerned a link between an oppo username and their employee and terminated them based on a falsehood they saw on oppo, that's no good. It could happen, probably won't, and it would be hard to take to court.

Read response to Tekuma. It’s not a threat at all. I don’t want the blog shut down because someone says something to the wrong person who will do something about it. Libel isn’t cool, and just letting it go is not the way to go if you plan to keep things afloat. And no, I don’t accuse people of being racist, homophobic, or sexist just freely. I have been a dick on more than one occasion, I won’t deny that, but I truly care for this blog. Letting someone who brings mods around everytime they harass someone isn’t safe for the blog. There are people on this blog who have been FP who use their name, and gave been accused of things they are not guilty of. So no, I am not threatenting you, the mods, or anybody, I’m just letting people know that if they see something, say something. In fact, I took your advice, I have taken to flagging and reporting harassment, but it seems to be going well.

I could actually get into the ins and outs of libel law with you, but I’m not instead I’m going simply say, if you see something wrong, flag it, alert it to the mods attention and then get the fuck over it. The mods are going to do what the mods are going to do, if they dont “fix” the issue like you want them to, there is plenty of opportunity to either A: simply ignore said “issue” or B: other automotive communities you can spend your time on. either way, incessantly whinging about someone or something, when you have no rights and no real authority is childish and inane.

The blog is unlikely to be shut down for such a reason. To start with, libel laws are shall we say... infrequently evoked, much less evoked effectively. The reason for that is simple: to successfully do so, you must prove actual, not insignificant damage. That is unlikely in the individual case that you are referring to, and unlikely on Oppositelock in general.

And yes, you have stirred shit a few too many times yourself to be worthy of throwing the first stone. You and I both know that that’s true. This post is an example of that.

I understand that you care about this blog, but you certainly seem to have an unusual way of demonstrating that. Shit-stirring like this is not the best way of expressing your concern for Oppositelock. I also understand that have perceived issues with things now and then, and that’s just fine. We’re happy to hear about your views.

However, there are a couple of things you need to keep in mind:

1) There is usually a lot more context and lot more factors at play than you perceive. That’s not any fault of your own - you don’t have access to the context necessary to realize what those factors are. If you did, I’m sure passive-aggressive shit-stirring like this wouldn’t even occur to you. However, as a decision to do our best to respect the privacy of people, we do not hand out the details of the actions that we take with regards to other commenters, just as we do not share the details of anything that happens between you and the mod group. Please just keep in mind that you likely don’t know all of the context

2) This place is not a democracy. It is Gawker Media property that is kept in running order by people with the blessing of Gawker Media to do so. We are not beholden to provide you or anyone else with anything other than a functional subblog for as long as Gawker Media allows it to exist. There is no voting. There is no right to freedom of speech. It’s private property.

3) All of the effort that you put into passive-aggressive bullshit like this could probably be better spent. This is a tiny little subblog in a tiny little corner of the internet. There are bigger matters in life.

In summary: You’re on private property, and you have no rights. Only privileges. Play nice. Leave the passive-aggressive bullshit at the door, and don’t stir shit. Also, go outside once in a while. Don’t let stuff on the internet bug you so much. It’s ultimately not a big deal.
